Charging Costs: What Changed

Home electricity rates rose 7% nationally in 2026 — the biggest year-over-year jump in residential electricity costs since 2023. Most of the increase came from grid infrastructure investment and fuel costs for natural gas power plants. For a typical EV driver doing 90% home charging, the actual annual impact is small: about $42/year more.

Public fast charging is the bigger story. Tesla Supercharger rates averaged $0.40–0.52/kWh in 2026 in most states. Third-party DC fast chargers (Electrify America, ChargePoint, EVgo) hit $0.43/kWh average — up from $0.38 in 2025. If you do road trips or live in an apartment without home charging, this matters more than the home electricity increase.

States with the biggest electricity rate increases in 2026: California (+12%), Connecticut (+9%), Massachusetts (+8%). States with minimal change: Texas (+1%), Washington (+2%), Idaho (flat).

EV Purchase Prices: The Bright Spot

2026 was a good year to buy an EV on price. Tesla reduced Model 3 and Model Y prices multiple times. The Chevy Equinox EV launched at $34,995 — below $35K for the first time in that class. The Ford Mach-E saw $3,000–$5,000 price cuts. The Nissan Leaf hung on below $28,000.

Used EVs dropped even more sharply: -8% year-over-year as 2022–2023 off-lease vehicles hit the market in volume. A 2022 Tesla Model 3 that sold used for $32,000 in 2025 was trading for $28,000–$29,000 in early 2026. For buyers focused on value, used EVs in 2026 offer the strongest case they've had since electrics went mainstream.

5-Year Total Cost: 2025 vs 2026 Buyer

A buyer purchasing a mid-range EV in 2026 vs the same model in 2025:

5-Year Cost Component 2025 Buyer 2026 Buyer
Purchase price (before credits)$56,000$54,000
5-year charging cost$3,000$3,210
5-year maintenance$3,500$3,500
5-year total (excl. insurance)$62,500$60,710

Assumes 15,000 mi/yr, 90% home charging at national avg rate. Federal tax credits not included — apply if eligible.

Common Questions

Did the federal EV tax credit change in 2026?

The federal Clean Vehicle Credit (IRA Section 30D) was eliminated in September 2025 as part of the One Big Beautiful Budget Act. State incentives remain in 20+ states. New for 2026: the OBBBA allows deducting up to $10,000/year in interest on auto loans for U.S.-manufactured vehicles, which includes many EVs. See the full 2026 EV tax credit breakdown.

Which EVs got the biggest price cuts in 2026?

Tesla Model 3 and Y saw the largest absolute cuts — $2,000–$4,000 off 2025 prices depending on trim. Chevy Equinox EV dropped below $35K. Ford Mach-E cut $3,000–$5,000 on most trims. Rivian R1T and R1S held prices steady. Luxury EVs (Mercedes, BMW) saw minimal price movement.

What will EV costs look like in 2027?

Battery costs continue falling — lithium carbonate prices dropped 60% from 2023 peaks. Manufacturers are expected to pass more of that through in 2027 pricing, particularly for base trims. Electricity rates are projected to rise another 4–6% nationally. The overall 5-year cost picture for EVs should improve modestly in 2027 absent a major policy change.
