EV vs Gas Costs in 2026: What You'll Actually Pay

Gas at $3.40/gallon. Home electricity at 15¢/kWh. EVs cost 3–5¢/mile to run; gas cars cost 10–16¢/mile. Over 5 years, the typical EV owner saves $3,000–$9,000 against a comparable gas car — more with the federal tax credit, less without it.

What Changed for EV Costs in 2026

1
Point-of-sale tax credit transfers are now standard

Since 2024, qualified buyers can transfer the $7,500 IRA credit directly at the dealership — you get the discount at purchase instead of waiting for your tax refund. This makes the effective price reduction immediate. Most major dealers now support this. Income verification happens through the IRS portal at time of sale.

2
More qualifying vehicles under $55,000

Several EVs dropped below the $55,000 cap in 2025–2026 as manufacturers adjusted pricing. The Chevy Equinox EV ($34,995), Tesla Model 3 ($38,990), and Nissan Ariya ($38,600) all qualify. The Chevy Blazer EV and several base Tesla Model Y trims are now eligible after price cuts.

3
Electricity rates are up 3–5% YoY nationally

Residential electricity climbed from ~14¢ to ~15¢/kWh nationally since early 2025. This slightly reduces EV fuel savings but doesn't flip the math for most drivers. States like Washington (10¢/kWh) and Idaho remain exceptional. California's rate increases have made home charging there less advantageous than it was in 2023.

4
Used EV prices have stabilized

After the 2023–2024 correction when used EV values dropped 25–30%, the used market has steadied. A 2022 Tesla Model 3 runs $22,000–$27,000 — often eligible for the $4,000 used EV credit (Section 25E) if under $25,000. Used EV buyers have a narrow but real opportunity here.
